##  Managing controlled substances 

Controlled substances have extensive licensing, registration, storage, security, research use, disposal, and inventory requirements because of their potential for abuse.

You must understand these requirements before possessing Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) or Massachusetts Department of Public Health controlled substances.

Before working with controlled substances:

- **All controlled substances:** Review [controlled substances requirements and guidelines](/resource/controlled-substances-guide "Controlled Substances Guide").
- **DEA controlled substances:** Review the [DEA Researcher’s Manual](https://www.deadiversion.usdoj.gov/GDP/(DEA-DC-057)(EO-DEA217)_Researchers_Manual_Final_signed.pdf).

Use [DEA Form 41](https://www.deadiversion.usdoj.gov/21cfr_reports/surrend/surrend.html) to destroy DEA controlled substances.
