# Satellite Accumulation Area Inspections

## Summary

How to conduct weekly inspections of hazardous waste storage satellite accumulation areas (SAA).

## Who is this for?

- Building and operations management.
- Labs and research.

## Inspection frequency

If you generate hazardous waste, you must visually inspect each of your SAA containers at least once each week.

Facility staff must also inspect each SAA container weekly.

## Inspection criteria

Inspect each SAA and waste container to confirm all waste is properly managed.

If you find any issues, correct them immediately.

### Container condition expand\_more

- **Store only one container of each waste chemical or waste mixture in a SAA at a time.** Do not duplicate waste streams by creating more than one undated waste container for the same chemical.
- Confirm that each container (including eco-funnels) meets these criteria:
    - Is in good condition and does not have issues that could cause leaks, such as severe rusting, cracks, or dents.
    - Is compatible with the type of waste stored.
    - Is securely closed unless someone is actively adding waste.
    - Does not have funnels left in the opening.

### Container labels expand\_more

Label every container used to store any amount of hazardous waste with:

- A hazardous label affixed to the container.
- The full chemical name of each primary constituent written out in words (no formulas, abbreviations, or symbols). This includes chemical components of waste mixtures.
- The words “Hazardous Waste.”
- The waste type.
- At least one [chemical hazard designation](/resource/chemical-waste-hazard-and-sink-disposal-tool "Chemical Waste Hazard and Sink Disposal Tool").

### Containment and segregation expand\_more

Confirm all waste is properly segregated:

- Place all containers in secondary containment trays.
- Segregate containers of potentially incompatible waste.
- Use secondary containment for liquid waste containers.
- Store stock (virgin) chemicals separately from waste chemicals.

### Containers ready for disposal expand\_more

For full containers and containers otherwise ready for disposal:

- Label each container with the date it was filled or otherwise became ready for disposal.
- List the approximate percentage of each primary constituent in the container.
- Remove all waste containers from the SAA within three days of the date on the label.
